I recently tweaked our blog template and was surprised to see a large number of pages were still displaying the old template! Obviously these pages were being displayed by WP Super-cache, but I had already deleted the wordpress cache, so how was it possible?

I was using the latest version of WP-super-cache 0.8.4 (like most wordpress users), a superb must-have plugin that provides a very fast caching module for WordPress, which means your site can easily survive a Digg on a shared server. When I checked the Supercache admin panel, it showed the counter stuck at 1183 expired files in supercache, and it would not change whatever you do.

WP-Supercache Not Deleting Expired Pages

alt

After repeated attempts I simply could not delete the Super cache expired files - I tried turning the plugin on and off, tried to turn it half on (WP-cache only, Supercache disabled), supercache compression on and off, delete cache button, delete expired button& but nothing helped.

The first time I had installed WP-supercache a few months back, it was not caching pages, but I fixed the issue. This time however the problem refused to get fixed. I simply could not let 1183 frequently visited pages on the site show outdated pages with an older template.

Switch to Older Version of WP-Supercache

I realized the problem had occurred since I installed the latest version of WP-supercache recently by plugin autoupgrade. The changelog revealed some change was recently made to garbage collection timing. Someone suggested I try the WP Super Cache Cleaner WordPress plugin that will periodically delete expired super-cache files regardless of whether your blog has reached the “X requests” threshold. However, only expired “super-cached” files will be deleted and WP-Cache files won’t be affected.

Since it would take time before more users reported the issue, a bug was identified, and a new version released, I decided to switch back to the previous version. But where could I find the previous version of WP-supercache?

Fortunately wordpress plugin headquarters archive all older plugin versions. I found the older version of WP-Super-cache (0.8.3) there and downloaded it. Then after backing up my current WP-supercache folder from the server, I uploaded the older version. Then I reactivated the plugin, pressed delete cache and& Expired pages = 0

More Supercache Experiments

UPDATE: WP-super-cache stopped working again after switching back to an older version. Till then manually deleting the cache seemed to be the reasonable option to keep the site going. I then switched back to the latest version. And here is how I proceeded further.

Under wp-content/cache/supercache/ there were hundreds of folders. I deleted all of them, but some folders refused to get deleted and had strange triple backslashes.

directorynotempty

Undeletedfolders

I figured maybe these folders were causing the cache to get stuck. Since these folders were undeletable via my FTP client Filezilla, I had to login via Shell using puTTY and delete these folders. Once the Supercache folder was empty, I tried to deactivate and reactivate. Still not working.

Now based on my previous experiences I deleted advanced-cache.php link in wp-content. Then I temporarily gave 777 priveleges to wp-content, again deactivated and reactivated the plugin, a new advanced-cache.php was created automatically, switched back wp-content to 755 and behold - the caching started as normal.

This is my personal experience, I am no professional expert in this, try it at your own risk.

Do you spend your entire day surfing the internet and have withdrawl symptoms when offline? Chinese doctors took the first step to give a diagnostic definition of Internet addiction to address medical concerns over psychological problems from Internet overuse.

Symptoms of addiction included yearning to get back online, mental or physical distress, irritation and difficulty concentrating or sleeping. The definition, based on a study of more than 1,300 problematic computer users, classifies as addicts those who spend at least six hours online a day and have shown at least one symptom in the past three months.

They say such persons can seek medical help and counselling and now psychiatrists can easily treat such cases. I am sure a large population is surfing the web over 6 hours daily and showing one of those symptoms. I am sure many of my bloggers friends show these signs of addiction too. Maybe I am also getting addicted to the web, sitting and writing this post on a Sunday evening, though I still try to avoid my blogging time wasting habits.

Wikipedia defines Internet addiction disorder (IAD) into subtypes by activity, such as pornography, overwhelming and immoderate gaming, inappropriate involvement in online social networking sites or blogging, and Internet shopping addiction. They define net compulsions as activities which, if done in person, would normally be considered troublesome, such as compulsive gambling or shopping. Problematic computer use or pathological computer use are accepted descriptions for excessive computer use that interferes with daily life.

Here are some web addiction videos to look out for -

Its a high-security data center run by one of Sweden’s largest ISPs. Located in an old nuclear bunker deep below the bedrock of Stockholm city, its one of the coolest data centers you can work in.

alt

Royal Pingdom point us to some cool facts about the data center - Originally a military bunker and nuclear shelter during the Cold War era. The facility still has the code name from its military days: Pionen White Mountains. It is located in central Stockholm below 30 meters (almost 100 ft) of bedrock and can withstand a hydrogen bomb

It houses the Network Operations Center for one of Sweden’s largest ISPs Bahnhof. It uses German submarine engines for backup power and  has 1.5 megawatt of cooling for the servers. Triple redundancy Internet backbone access ensures Pionen is one the best-connected places in northern Europe.

Of course the work environment is really cool with simulated daylight and greenhouses, waterfalls and a huge 2600-liter salt water fish tank!

Stanislaw Stas Gunkel is a 7-year-old blogger, who likes to blog about politics, Barrack Obama, and Sarah Palin on his blog Report from Planet Stas. His political influence stirred Barack Obama to send him a letter five days before the election with some invaluable advice.

I leave you with three bits of advice that will make your life more fulfilling: Look out for other people, even when it does not directly benefit you; strive to make a difference everywhere you go; and get back up every time you are knocked down.

This news was enough to get the mainstream media all excited and landed him an interview on NBC Chicago

I knew there are lot of young bloggers out there, but for a 7-year-old to blog about politics and being acknowledged for it is great.

Barack is often called Americas first internet president, for his mass communication via the internet, and it is amazing how he used the internet and social Media to become President-Elect. I was touched when Barack Obama followed us on Twitter.

Microsoft has officially launched the Microsoft Store for the U.S. enabling shoppers to buy their favorite Microsoft software and products online this holiday season. Microsoft had previously launched such Stores internationally in the UK, Germany and Korea.

Microsoft Senior Program Manager Trevin Chow says the main advantage is that you can buy and download Microsoft products and this policy is referred to as Electronic Software Distribution (ESD). So once your payment is confirmed, you can immediately download the product to your computer and install it right away. This means zero shipping costs you might have paid otherwise, and you can use the software right now.

alt

So what if you need to re-install the product later? Microsoft Store lets you re-download the product until mainstream support for the product ends, which is usually 5 years after the product is released.

There is a huge Microsoft software range listed there and you have the option to download or order a CD. There are many hardware products also ranging from the beautiful Microsoft Arc Mouse to the more rugged Xbox 360 Elite, which have to be shipped of course.

How popular is your profile on Twitter? A new tool called Twitter Grader promises to measure the power of Twitter profiles and rank your influence in the Twitterosphere.

I checked our Twitter profile and put it to test on Twitter grade and got a score of 96.2 - A grade of 96.2 means that the user scores higher than 96.2 percent of the other user profiles that have been graded.
Its is mostly based on the number of followers you have, the power of this network of followers, the pace of your updates and the completeness of your profile.

alt

Check the Twitter Elite who have a top score of 100, and have therby earned the respect and admiration for having the highest Twitter Grade. You can spot all the top Twitter users there.

Beside the fact that Twitter is a useful communication tool for bloggers, the Twitter popularity is evident by the fact that Britney Spears started tweeting, Barrack Obama follows us, Twitter counters are more popular than feed counters, and people have started to sell Twitter accounts for cash. Panoramic photography is one of the most fascinating forms of art. Professional photographers use some specific equipment to correctly perform this photography technique. However, now the camera technology is making such forms of art possible from a regular digital camera as well and it makes it look good too.

Let’s look at one such application from Microsoft which stitches multiple pictures together to create a panorama. This software is called “Microsoft Image Composite Editor” and it was recently released in Beta on Microsoft Research portal.

Stitch multiple photos to create panoramic view

Let’s take a quick look at how it works. I took three pictures to be used as an example in this post.

alt alt alt

Copy the pictures from the camera memory to your computer. Launch Microsoft Image Composite Editor and just drag the pictures and drop them on it. This application reads the images and stitches them together effortlessly and shows you the first view of the panorama.

In first view, use little dots around the image to adjust the crop margins

alt

In addition Composite Editor lets you adjust the center of curvatures of the image. Click on the Grid-like icon next to the crop icon as shown in the image below.

alt

Now you get more options based on “Projections” which will let you further adjust the image for the perfect balance

alt

Before exporting take a look at the options available in the bottom pane of the application. These options let you improve the quality of the image and let you export the image in different formats.

alt

See all the Exporting options

alt

As you can see in the image above, it lets you export images in different formats including HD and Deep Zoom (Silverlight) and in Photoshop (.PSD) format with layers. I have used a few softwares including AutoStitch to create panoramic views but I found ICE (Image Composite Editor) faster and easy to use and did I tell you it’s a freeware?

And this is what those three pictures look like when stitched together

alt

So, download it and create as many panoramic views you possibly can.

Guest article from Web Hosting Search
The web hosting industry and its thousands of providers offer a vast number of hosting solutions today. But the three most common “packages” of services are shared hosting, virtual and dedicated hosting. Whether you’re setting up your first ever website or creating your 31st, when it comes down to choosing a hosting provider, these are your options. But what kind of hosting do they indicate, how do they differ from each other and which one is best for you?

Shared Hosting

Sharing a server with up to hundreds of other websites, you will be limited in many ways. Your hosting provider, like any other, can offer shared web hosting based on the premonition that its customers actually won’t use all the “storage space” and “bandwidth” that they are promised.

Fact is that most shared hosting clients are beginner webmasters running small websites with traffic volumes that only require a fraction of the space and bandwidth that is included in the hosting deal. That is why hosting companies can promise “unlimited” storage space or bandwidth - since you will probably never exceed more than a small percentage of the GB’s your are promised in storage space and bandwidth.

However, as you sign up to a shared hosting account you will normally agree to a certain percent of the server CPU usage that you are not allowed to exceed. And though a rare occurrence, sudden peaks in website traffic and data transfer may cause your website to exceed the limit. The hosting provider then has the right to temporarily seize your website.

Virtual Private Hosting

Now, the remaining two hosting options are in many ways your rescue from shared hosting, as they both indicate your own server – your own dedicated server. A virtual private server (VPS) also called Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS) is the solution that rightfully can be placed between shared hosting and a dedicated server.

While physically still sharing a server with other hosting clients, a VPS offer an environment of an own server. One single server can hence be divided into several individual units that run on their own operative system and can be individually rebooted. However, you will still be sharing the physical server’s CPU-usage, disk space and bandwidth with other VPS users.

Dedicated Hosting

Of these three hosting options, Dedicated hosting is perhaps the most extensive and all-inclusive. It is also the one hosting option that can use the adjective “unlimited” in its rightful meaning. You will get a server, dedicated to your websites and your websites only. No more sharing, official or unofficial. All storage space, bandwidth and CPU capacity is for you to use. The only limitation is based on the actual performance standards and size of the server. And that can always be upgraded.

To summarize – compared to a dedicated server, your own physical server, a VPS is simply an economic solution by hosting providers to be able to offer a dedicated server environment to a more affordable price. A virtual private server should at most be seen as the middle stop between shared and dedicated hosting. A virtual private server or shared web hosting are still merely economically bound solutions, regardless to your needs, and are far more limited than a dedicated server.

Guest post by Ruchir Chawdhry
A few months ago, my PC took over 10 minutes to start up. Now it just takes about a minute. Want to know how I did it? Heres how:

1.  Upgrade Your RAM

Yeah, the most obvious tip but people hardly upgrade it. RAM these days is very cheap, especially if you buy it through Amazon or eBay. When I checked Amazon, the price of 1 GB RAM was around $20-$30.

2. Get Rid of Unneeded Software

Most PCs come shipped with unneeded software. Uninstall all of them. Im sure there are better alternatives to those software. For example, my PC came shipped from hp with lots of bloatware such as HP Image Zone, Norton AntiVirus 2004, Record Now! CD & DVD Burning software etc. I uninstalled all of them and replaced them with better software like Picasa and Nero.

3. Keep Only One Browser

This is part of the getting rid of unneeded applications but I decided to separate it because so many people have 3, or even 4 browsers installed on their computer. I used to do this; I used to have Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, and Safari. Now I only have Mozilla Firefox. Yes, I even removed Internet Explorer!

Now you might be wondering how do I update Windows without Internet Explorer, right? Heres how I do it, and you can too: To update Windows from within Firefox, just download the IE Tab add-on. Using that plugin, you can access IE only sites like Windows Update with ease.

4. Get an All-in-One Solution for Your IM Needs

Im guessing that most of you have at least 2 IM clients installed. Uninstall all of them. Instead, get Digsby. Digsby is an All-in-One solution for your social media and IM needs.

5. Limit the Programs that Start Automatically

The programs that load automatically after your Windows starts can severely cripple the load time. To reduce the number of programs that start auto-load, download Revo Uninstaller. Disable the autoloading of applications carefully though. The rule of thumb is that if you dont know what the app does, dont disable it.

6. Delay the Startup of Your Remaining Autoloading Programs

Even after youve disabled the autoloading of most programs, there still is room to improve. The thing is that when your PC starts up, all your startup apps are fighting to run at the same time, which creates a bottleneck. To mitigate this effect, you can delay the launch of each of your startup program by a few seconds or minutes. Startup Delayer is an awesome app that does this.

7. Tweak Windowss Display & Animation Settings

Right-click on My Computer > Go to the Advanced tab and click on Settings under Performance. Now uncheck the checkbox next to Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing. Disabling them wont make your PC behave quicker per se but it will fasten the minimizing and maximizing of windows.

8. Disable Desktop Shortcuts

Shortcuts on your desktop are a waste. Not only do they increase your computer startup time, they also are an inefficient way to open stuff. There are more efficient ways to access applications, such through the Start Menu, the Quick Launch menu, or through software such as Launchy. To hide desktop shortcuts, right-click on your desktop, go to Arrange Icons by and uncheck Show Desktop Icons by clicking on it.

9. Check for Malware, Spyware, Viruses Regularly

The most important tip I can give you is to 1) have a firewall, 2) have an anti-spyware app, 3) have an anti-virus app, and 4) Regularly scan for viruses, spyware etc. If theres a virus or some spyware slowing down your computer then none of the above tips can help you. Youll first have to disinfect your PC. I use Ad-Aware 2008 as my anti-spyware app and Norton Internet Security 2009 as my firewall and anti-virus app.

If you follow the nine tips that I wrote above, I can guarantee that your PC will run 2x or even 3x faster.

PS: You can use Boot Timer to measure how much time your PC takes to startup fully.

All Windows Live Hotmail users accounts are being upgraded by default to the new Hotmail with no way to revert back to the original Hotmail, and this is going to affect all Hotmail accounts within in a week.

Microsoft announced that they analyzed several thousand comments, fixed several bugs, and released five updates to the code, and now by the end of this week, all Windows Live Hotmail users will be upgraded to the new Hotmail.

New Hotmail Will Not Switch Back to Older Version

I spotted over 500 comments on that announcement and majority of new Hotmail users seem to dislike the new version and are demanding to switch back to the older hotmail version. But Hotmail is unwilling to go back saying We can’t provide two fast, secure, reliable experiences, so we have decided to just keep the new version.

They agree that the design not optimal for smaller monitors and as monitor space is overwhelmed by ads and they are working on improvements to page layout that will give your inbox more space. They also inform that additional themes are being designed now, and will be coming soon. But I think they will not revert back like Sitemeter.

Microsoft has started converting MSN Hotmail to Windows Live Hotmail worldwide last year and the  new version promised better safety, productivity and flexibility of their free email service across clients on the web, desktop and mobile phones.

Earlier Microsoft had been enticing users to use Windows Live Hotmail on your mobile device to win a free Microsoft Zune music player everyday! They also launched Cool Hotmail to let users create email accounts with a large variety of custom domain names.
